You Know Your Skin Could Look Better
You wash your face every night. You wear sunscreen most days. You’re using skincare but you still see hyperpigmentation.
Sun spots. Dark marks left over from old breakouts. That shadowy discoloration along your cheeks that seems to deepen every summer no matter what you do. It is frustrating. And it can make even healthy skin feel completely out of reach.
Here is the truth: hyperpigmentation is one of the most common skin concerns we see at Self Skin Studio. It is also one of the most treatable. The key is knowing what is actually going on with your skin and which approach is right for it.
Why Hyperpigmentation Keeps Coming Back
Hyperpigmentation happens when the skin produces excess melanin in specific areas, creating spots that appear darker than the surrounding skin. It shows up in a few different forms and each one has its own triggers.
Sun damage and age spots build up from cumulative UV exposure over the years. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is the darkening that lingers after acne, a blemish or even a small wound heals. Melasma is hormonally driven and commonly appears on the forehead, upper lip and cheeks. It can be triggered by pregnancy, birth control or sun exposure.
Because the root cause varies, the right treatment varies too. A personalized treatment plan is almost always the answer. We can use multiple modalities and at home skincare products that work toward a common goal.
Treatments That Actually Work
BBL Heroic (BroadBand Light)
BBL Heroic uses high-intensity pulses of light to target and break down excess melanin, stimulate collagen production and accelerate your skin's natural renewal process. Sessions take around one hour and require minimal downtime. Most patients see meaningful results after one to three treatments.
BBL Heroic is one of the most effective options for sun damage, age spots and general pigmentation. One important note: if melasma is your primary concern, BBL Heroic may not be the best starting point since heat can occasionally worsen it. Moxi is typically the stronger fit for melasma.
Moxi Laser
Moxi is a gentle, non-ablative laser that targets water within skin cells rather than applying heat to the surface. This makes it safe for all skin tones and especially effective for melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and uneven texture.
Think of it as a full skin refresh. Results build gradually over time and Moxi pairs beautifully with BBL Heroic for a comprehensive approach to clarity and tone.
Chemical Peels
A chemical peel removes the outer layers of skin, taking excess pigmentation with it and encouraging fresh new skin to come through. It is a wonderful option for dullness, mild sun damage, and the dark marks left behind by acne.
Depending on the peel depth, you may experience a few days of dryness, flaking, and sensitivity. A series of treatments spaced four to six weeks apart typically delivers the best results.
Microneedling with PRP
Microneedling creates tiny controlled injuries in the skin that trigger your body's natural healing response. When combined with PRP, the growth factors in your own blood work to accelerate healing and target pigmentation, texture, and tone at the same time.
This is a great option for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and for anyone looking to address both discoloration and skin texture in a single treatment plan.
The Foundation, SPF
SPF, every day, even in the winter. UV exposure is one of the biggest drivers of melanin production and skipping sun protection will undo your progress faster than almost anything else. We recommend SPF 30 or higher every morning regardless of whether you are heading outside. UV exposure happens through windows too.
Brightening products like Fade, retinol, and Brighten can support your in-office treatments and help you hold onto results between appointments. We include an at home skincare routine recommendation as part of every skin wellness plan we build.
