What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers, often dubbed "lip fillers" when used in the lips, are gel-like substances injected beneath the skin to enhance facial features. They are made from a synthetic version of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring molecule that keeps our skin plump and hydrated. This filler is not only safe but also gradually absorbed by the body over time, allowing for temporary, natural-looking enhancements.

Is lip filler painful?

The thought of needles can be daunting. The discomfort associated with lip injections is generally minimal, thanks to the lidocaine mixed into the filler. This mild anesthetic helps numb the area quickly. Moreover, we employ various strategies to enhance your comfort—think numbing creams, dental blocks, gentle distractions like stress balls, and even a vibrating t-bar during the procedure.

What to Expect After Getting Lip Filler at Self Skin Studio

Post-treatment, it's typical to notice some mild redness, swelling, bruising, or tenderness at the injection sites. These effects are temporary and usually subside quickly. Initial swelling is more noticeable and gradually diminishes, revealing the final, stunning results. We often see the full results emerge about two weeks after the treatment, with the product settling beautifully over the following month.

What you should and shouldn’t do after receiving lip filler at Self Skin Studio

Once your fillers are beautifully in place, you'll want to take care of your newly plumped cheeks to ensure the best results:

  1. You may notice bruising or tenderness at the injection area. While these typically fade within 24-48 hours, some bruises can persist for up to 10-14 days.
  2. Swelling may occur for 24-48 hours post-treatment. Sleeping in an upright position can help reduce this, and it generally subsides after about two weeks.
  3. Postpone wearing makeup or lipstick until at least a day after your treatment. If makeup is essential, opt for mineral-based products for the face or use Aquaphor ointment for the lips.
  4. To minimize the chance of bruising, steer clear of intense workouts and alcohol for 24 hours post-procedure.
  5. For the first three days, or until redness and swelling decrease, avoid exposure to direct sunlight or extreme temperature variations.
  6. If you experience severe pain, unusual discoloration or paleness, intense swelling, visible red bumps, or white spots, please reach out to us right away.
  7. Hold off on dental work or other facial treatments such as facials, peels, massages, ultrasounds, and microdermabrasion for at least 2 weeks.
  8. For best outcomes, and to limit bruising and swelling, avoid alcohol, high-sodium and refined foods, spicy dishes, and smoking 24-48 hours surrounding your treatment.
  9. We usually schedule a follow-up around 2 weeks post-treatment.

Can Lip Fillers Be Reversed?

Absolutely! One of the great advantages of hyaluronic acid fillers is their reversibility. If you’re not quite in love with the results or if adjustments are needed, the filler can be easily dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. This flexibility is comforting for those new to fillers and ensures that you can proceed confidently.
