Lip filler is one of the most searched aesthetic treatments, and for good reason. When it's done well, the results look natural, balanced, and like the best version of your lips, not a different pair. When it's not, you can tell. The difference almost always comes down to provider skill, product choice, and restraint.
This post walks through what lip filler actually does, what the before and after process looks like, how it compares to a lip flip, and what to expect at every stage so you can decide whether it's the right fit for your goals.
What is lip filler?
Lip filler is a hyaluronic acid injectable that adds volume, hydration, and definition to the lips. Hyaluronic acid is a substance your body already produces to keep skin plump and hydrated, so the filler integrates naturally with your tissue rather than sitting on top of it.
At Self Skin Studio we carry Juvederm, Restylane, and RHA, and the product we choose depends on your specific goals. For lips, we tend to reach for products formulated for softness and hydration rather than firm structure, because lips need to feel natural and move naturally. We also never place more than 1 mL per treatment, because the goal is a result that looks like you, just more defined and hydrated.
Lip filler is reversible. All of our fillers are hyaluronic acid-based, which means they can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if you ever want to adjust or remove them.
Lip Filler Before and After: What the Process Looks Like
Before your appointment. Avoid blood thinners including aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E, and alcohol for at least a week before your treatment to minimize bruising. If you've ever had cold sores, take an antiviral starting 12 hours before and after your lip filler appointment. Skip dental work for 2 weeks before and after.
During the appointment. Your provider uses two numbing techniques, topical numbing and an injectable numbing block, so most patients find lip filler far more comfortable than they expected. The treatment itself typically takes under an hour, and results are visible right away.
Immediately after. Swelling and some bruising are normal and expected. Your lips will look bigger than the final result in the first few days, so don't judge the outcome yet. Sleep with your head elevated for the first 24 to 48 hours, avoid intense heat, exercise, and sun exposure for 24 hours, and hold off on makeup for as long as possible on the day of treatment.
Two weeks after. This is when the final result settles in. Swelling resolves, any firmness softens, and the filler integrates fully with the tissue. Lips may feel slightly firm or uneven in the first few weeks, which is normal and typically resolves on its own within 8 weeks.
How long it lasts. Lip filler lasts 9 to 12 months for most products, though some RHA formulas can last longer. Individual metabolism plays a role, and patients who are very active or have faster metabolisms sometimes notice results fade on the shorter end of that range.
Lip Filler vs. Lip Flip: What's the Difference?
These two treatments come up together often, and they're worth understanding side by side because they solve different problems.
Lip filler adds volume and definition. It's the right choice when you want more fullness, better shape, improved hydration, or a more defined border around the lip. It's also the treatment with more flexibility since your provider can address specific areas like the cupid's bow, the body of the lip, or the corners.
A lip flip uses a small amount of Botox placed just above the upper lip to relax the muscle and allow the lip to roll slightly outward. It doesn't add volume. What it does is make the upper lip appear slightly fuller and more defined, especially when smiling, without changing the actual size of the lip. It's a subtle treatment that works well for patients who want a small enhancement or who want to try something before committing to filler.
The two also work well together. A lip flip can complement filler by softening the muscle above the upper lip so the filler sits and moves more naturally. Your provider can talk through whether combining them makes sense for your goals.
Lip flip pricing at Self Skin Studio starts at $125 ($112.50 for members). Lip filler starts at $600 ($550 for members), depending on the product.

What Natural-Looking Lip Filler Actually Means
The overdone lip result that comes to mind when some patients think about filler is almost always the result of too much product placed too fast, or a provider prioritizing volume over proportion. Natural-looking results come from understanding how your lips relate to the rest of your face and working with that balance rather than against it.
At Self Skin Studio, our providers look at the full picture: your lip shape, your facial proportions, the relationship between your upper and lower lip, and what your lips naturally look like at rest and when you're smiling. The goal isn't to give everyone the same lips. It's to make your lips look like the best version of yours.
Results that last the longest and look the most natural also tend to be built gradually. A patient who starts with a conservative amount and builds from there almost always ends up happier with the outcome than someone who goes for maximum volume in one session.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Lip Filler?
Lip filler is a good fit for patients who want more hydration and definition without dramatically changing the shape of their lips, patients whose lips have thinned with age, patients with asymmetry they'd like to soften, and patients who want better-defined borders or a more balanced upper-to-lower lip ratio.
Lip filler is not appropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and we ask patients to wait at least 2 weeks after dental work before scheduling. If you have a history of cold sores, let your provider know at booking so we can plan accordingly.
