3 Tips to Prep Your Skin for the Best At-Home Tan

At Self Skin Studio in Wilmington, NC, we’re big believers in that sun-kissed glow—but not at the expense of your skin’s health. While SPF is your best friend (especially here on the Carolina coast), you can still channel those beachy bronze vibes without UV damage. The secret? A flawless at-home self-tan, and the prep that makes all the difference.

Here are our three of our favorite tips for getting the most natural, even glow—from Wrightsville Beach weekends to weekday errands.

1. Exfoliate Like You Mean It

The key to a streak-free self-tan starts before you reach for the self-tanner. Dead skin cells and dry patches are self-tanner’s worst enemy, leaving you with splotches or uneven color.

At least 24 hours before you tan, do a gentle but thorough exfoliation. We love a physical exfoliant like a dry brush for areas like knees, ankles, and elbows. But don’t forget your face—use Tone or our enzyme cleanser, Revive, to ensure your face tans as evenly as the rest of you.

Bonus tip: After exfoliating, shave if needed—this prevents patchy areas and extends the life of your tan.

2. Hydrate Strategically (But Not Right Before)

Self-tanner clings to dry skin, but it also doesn’t adhere well to freshly moisturized skin. So what’s the move?

Moisturize regularly in the days leading up to your tan, especially if you’ve just exfoliated. But on the day of your tan, skip lotions, oils, deodorant, or anything that could act as a barrier between your skin and the product—except for a tiny bit of lotion on your knuckles, wrists, knees, and ankles to prevent buildup.

This balance helps your tan glide on and develop evenly—no patchy ankles or surprise streaks.

3. Treat Your Tan Like Skincare

After applying your tan, wait at least 4-8 hours before rinsing (or follow your product instructions). Once it’s set, it’s time to protect that glow.

Use a hydrating body lotion daily and avoid exfoliating until you’re ready to reapply. SPF is still non-negotiable—just because you look bronzed doesn’t mean you’re protected. A self-tan + mineral SPF combo is the new summer power duo. Remember: the best tan is one that makes you feel good. Whether it’s a glow-up for a weekend getaway or just to add a little warmth to your weekday routine, self-tanning should feel like self-care—not stress.
