You Have Done the Research. Now You Are More Confused Than Before.
BBL. Moxi. Photofacial. Laser. Light therapy. The terms stack up quickly once you start looking into skin treatments, and after enough scrolling it can feel hard to know what you actually need. Both BBL HEROic and Moxi come up constantly in conversations about pigmentation, texture, and skin health. They are often recommended together and both are offered at Self Skin Studio. But they are not the same treatment, and understanding the difference makes it much easier to know where to start.
What BBL HEROic Does
BBL HEROic, or BroadBand Light High Energy Rapid Output with Intelligent Control, is a photofacial that uses high-intensity pulses of broadband light to target pigment and vascular concerns in the skin. It delivers light energy to specific chromophores in your cells, which breaks down excess melanin and stimulates collagen production in the deeper layers of the skin.
BBL HEROic is the treatment we reach for when sun spots, age spots, redness, rosacea, broken capillaries, or overall uneven tone are the primary concern. Sessions are relatively quick, downtime is minimal, and most patients return to normal activities the same day. You may notice treated spots temporarily darken in the first 24 to 48 hours as pigment rises to the surface. That is a normal part of the process and resolves within a week or two as the skin sheds those layers naturally.
One important note: BBL HEROic is not recommended for active melasma. Because it generates heat in the skin, it can occasionally worsen hormonal pigmentation rather than improve it.
There is also meaningful science behind the long-term benefits of consistent BBL treatment. The Stanford Forever Young study found that patients who received regular BBL over time showed skin that behaved more like younger skin at the cellular level, which is part of why we recommend it as an ongoing part of a skin health plan rather than a one-time treatment.
What Moxi Does
Moxi is a non-ablative fractional laser that works differently from BBL HEROic. Rather than targeting pigment directly, Moxi targets water within skin cells. This triggers a controlled healing response that resurfacing the skin, reduces pigmentation, and stimulates collagen from the top down.
Because Moxi does not rely on heat the same way BBL HEROic does, it is safe for all skin tones including darker complexions, and it is one of the better options available for melasma. It also has resurfacing benefits that BBL HEROic does not, making it effective for uneven texture, fine lines, and dullness alongside pigmentation.
Moxi is often described as a preventative treatment as much as a corrective one. Patients in their twenties, thirties, and forties who want to stay ahead of early signs of aging tend to love it, and it works just as well for patients with more established concerns. After treatment, some redness and a sandpaper-like texture in the skin for a few days is normal as the small renewal zones, called MENDs, shed and reveal fresh skin underneath.
How BBL HEROic and Moxi Work Together
One of the reasons we love these two treatments is how well they complement each other. BBL HEROic works the skin from the inside out, targeting chromophores in the deeper layers. Moxi works the skin from the top down, resurfacing and stimulating collagen closer to the surface. Together they address the two most visible signs of aging simultaneously: color and texture.
When stacked in the same appointment, BBL HEROic clears redness and discoloration while Moxi smooths and refines. The combined result tends to be more comprehensive than either treatment achieves on its own, which is why many patients who want a full refresh choose to do both.
When to Use One, the Other, or Both
BBL HEROic is typically the stronger choice when sun damage and visible discoloration are the primary concern, especially spots that have been building over time. If your skin has noticeable sun spots, redness, or uneven tone, BBL HEROic addresses those concerns directly.
Moxi tends to be a better fit when texture is part of the picture alongside pigmentation, when melasma is involved, when you have a darker skin tone, or when you want a gentler entry point into laser treatments.
For many patients, stacking both in the same appointment is the most effective approach. Your provider will look at your skin, talk through your concerns and goals, and make a recommendation that actually fits your skin and your lifestyle.
What to Expect Before, During, and After
Before your appointment. Avoid direct sun exposure for at least two weeks before treatment and come in without a tan. Both treatments require dormant sun damage to work effectively. We will start with a consultation and skin assessment to customize settings based on your skin type and concerns.
During treatment. BBL HEROic feels like quick, warm flashes of light. Moxi feels like a light prickling sensation, and we use topical numbing cream to keep it comfortable. A combined BBL and Moxi session typically takes about an hour.
After treatment. With BBL HEROic, redness usually resolves within hours and any darkened spots flake off naturally within one to two weeks. With Moxi, expect mild redness for one to three days and a slight sandpaper texture as the MENDs shed over five to seven days, revealing fresh skin underneath. Both treatments require consistent SPF while healing and for the weeks following.
When you see results. Most patients notice brighter, more even tone within two weeks of BBL HEROic. Moxi results in smoother texture and radiance within two to three weeks. When combined, improvements in both pigment and texture are typically visible within two to four weeks.
Fall and Winter Are an Ideal Time for These Treatments
Both BBL HEROic and Moxi can be performed year-round, but fall and winter are especially popular in Wilmington. After a long summer of sun exposure, patients often notice more spots, redness, or overall dullness. Cooler months mean less time outdoors in direct sun, which makes it easier to protect your skin during the healing process and stick to the aftercare guidelines. It is also a natural time to start an ongoing maintenance plan heading into the new year.
How many treatments will I need?
For BBL HEROic, most patients see the best results with a series of two to three sessions spaced four to six weeks apart, followed by maintenance. Moxi is often done in a similar series. Your provider will build a plan based on your skin and your goals.
Does it hurt?
BBL HEROic feels like quick, warm flashes. Moxi feels like a light prickling sensation. Topical numbing makes both very manageable for most patients.
When can I wear makeup after treatment?
Most patients are comfortable returning to makeup within 24 hours after BBL HEROic, and after about three days with Moxi.
Can I do these treatments if I have melasma?
Moxi is a safer option for melasma. BBL HEROic is not recommended for active melasma. Your provider will assess your skin at the consultation and make a recommendation based on what will actually help rather than risk making things worse.
Are results permanent?
No treatment stops the natural aging process, but consistent maintenance helps your skin look healthier and more youthful for longer. The Stanford Forever Young study showed that patients who received regular BBL over time demonstrated skin that behaved like younger skin at the cellular level, which supports treating these as part of an ongoing skin health plan rather than a one-time fix.
