Moxi is one of our most requested laser treatments at Self Skin Studio, and it earns that spot for good reason. It is effective, comfortable, safe for all skin types, and requires minimal downtime. Whether you are just starting to notice early signs of sun damage and want to get ahead of them, or you want to maintain and improve your skin's overall quality over time, Moxi fits into a real life and delivers real results.
Here is everything you need to know.
What is Moxi?
Moxi is a non-ablative fractional laser developed by Sciton. It delivers fractionated laser energy to the skin, creating controlled micro-coagulation zones that trigger the body's natural healing response. Old, damaged cells are replaced with fresh, healthy ones. The result is brighter, smoother, more even-toned skin with improved texture and collagen production.
Non-ablative means Moxi does not remove the surface layer of the skin the way more aggressive lasers do. The treatment works beneath the surface, which is why downtime is minimal and it can be performed year-round on all skin types.
What Moxi Treats
Moxi addresses a range of concerns and works well both as a corrective treatment and as a preventative one for patients who want to maintain healthy skin over time.
It reduces early sun damage, uneven pigmentation, and sunspots. It improves overall skin tone and texture, softens fine lines, minimizes the appearance of enlarged pores, and lifts epidermal melasma. Patients often describe the result as their skin looking more awake, more even, and more like it used to.
Because Moxi does not rely on heat the same way BBL does, it is one of the safest options available for patients with melasma and for darker skin tones.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
Your provider will apply a topical numbing cream before the treatment begins. Once you are numb, a cooling fan runs throughout the session to keep you comfortable. The laser is applied gently and precisely across the treatment area, and the entire session typically takes between 15 and 30 minutes.
Most patients find Moxi much more tolerable than they expected. You may feel some warmth and a light prickling sensation, but for most people it is very manageable. Right after your appointment, your skin may look and feel like a mild sunburn. That typically settles within a few hours.
What Happens After: A Day-by-Day Timeline
Understanding the healing process makes it much easier to feel confident about what you are seeing.
Immediately after. Mild redness and warmth, similar to a light sunburn. This is normal and typically resolves within hours. Avoid makeup for the first 24 hours and keep skincare simple and gentle.
Day 1. Skin may still have a pinkish tone and mild swelling. Keep your skin clean and avoid anything harsh or active. Physical sunscreen is essential.
Days 2 and 3. This is when MENDS appear. MENDS (Microscopic Epidermal Necrotic Debris) are tiny dark spots with a slightly rough, sandpaper-like texture. They can look like small dots across the skin and are sometimes mistaken for dirt or congestion. They are neither. MENDS are old, damaged skin cells being pushed to the surface as your skin heals and regenerates. Their appearance means the treatment is working.
Days 4 through 7. The MENDS naturally begin to flake off, revealing fresh skin underneath. Do not pick at them or scrub the skin during this window. Let them shed on their own. Picking can cause scarring or prolong healing.
Week 2 and beyond. Most MENDS have shed by the end of the second week, and the skin looks noticeably brighter, smoother, and more even. Collagen continues to build in the weeks that follow, so results keep improving.
Post-Treatment Care
A few straightforward steps make a real difference in how well your skin heals and how long your results last.
Wear a physical mineral sunscreen every day and avoid direct sun exposure while your skin is healing. Stay out of saunas and skip intense workouts for 24 hours. Use only gentle, non-irritating skincare products for the first three to five days. Avoid active ingredients like retinol, acids, and exfoliants during this window. A cool compress (never direct ice) can help if your skin feels uncomfortable. Skip makeup for the first 24 hours if you can.
How Many Treatments Will You Need?
Most patients start with a series of three to four sessions spaced four to six weeks apart to address specific concerns like sun damage, uneven tone, or texture. Once you have reached your goal, regular maintenance sessions help keep the skin looking its best over time. Many patients incorporate Moxi into their ongoing skin health routine the same way they would a great serum or SPF, as something that simply keeps things working well.
The right plan depends on your skin and your goals, and your provider will walk you through exactly what makes sense at your consultation.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
Moxi is one of the most versatile laser treatments we offer because it is safe for all skin types, including darker complexions and patients with melasma, and can be performed in any season. It is a good fit for patients who want to correct early signs of sun damage and aging, patients who want to maintain skin quality over time, and patients who want meaningful results without significant downtime.
If you are not sure whether Moxi is the right starting point for your skin, a consultation is the place to figure that out. Your provider will assess your skin, talk through your goals, and build a plan around what will actually move the needle for you.
